NEW ORLEANS – The University of New Orleans women's tennis team (15-5, 7-4 Southland) won 75 percent of their matches in the regular season. Now UNO will turn their attention to postseason as the team will square off against McNeese State (14-8, 7-4) in the opening round of the Southland Tournament on Friday in Nacogdoches, Texas. The match is scheduled for 2 p.m.
UNO enters as the five-seed in the tournament after coming up on the short end of a four-way tie for second. The Privateers finished their conference slate at 7-4, which included a win over McNeese State on April 10 at the University Tennis Center.
The Privateers look to take their act on the road after remaining undefeated at home in the 2016 campaign. Throughout the season, UNO has had balance and depth throughout their lineup led by a host of experienced players.
The two seniors,
Hafsa Laraibi and
Soledad Calderon Arroyo have recorded 13 and 10 wins respectively in singles. Laraibi played three different spots in the rotation and Calderon played between the No. 1 and No. 2 spots in the order. Calderon also partnered with
Anna Segarra Rius in doubles for a 9-4 overall record.
Segarra earned a 7-4 conference record while playing mostly at No. 1 singles.
Trang Dao and
Anja Luethi had a 10-2 overall mark in doubles and a 4-1 record in conference play. Dao won 11 of her 13 matches played at No. 4 singles. Luethi was 12-4 overall on the season
Yasmine Rashad was 11-5 overall and 9-3 at No. 6 singles.
Paula Garriga Ullate and
Brittany Johnson answered the call each time in doubles, going 5-0.
Giovanna Fioretti has led the charge for McNeese State this season. Fioretti earned Southland Freshman of the Year honors for her 14-6 overall record and 8-3 showing in league play. Fioretti is 7-3 in her last 10 matches entering the tournament.
The Cowgirls had two team members named to the All-Southland team. Hannah Brett enters with a 17-3 overall mark and has won 13 straight. Brett also had a perfect conference record at 9-0. Sarah Jurakova was 14-5 overall and 7-2 in conference play.
