Privateers Head to Jim Mize Invitational to Begin Outdoor Campaign

MEET INFORMATION & SCHEDULE  | LIVE RESULTS

NEW ORLEANS – The University of New Orleans Track and Field program will make its first appearance at the Jim Mize Invitational when it travels to Ruston, La. to kick off the 2024 outdoor season on Friday and Saturday. The trip also marks a reunion with former UNO track and field head coach Brian Johnson – now the head coach at Louisiana Tech.

Privateer throwers will get things started at 3:00 p.m. on Friday afternoon at the Jim Mize Track and Field Complex in Ruston. Briana Bell, Christina Davis, and Jannah Sharpe will compete in the women's hammer throw to start the afternoon for New Orleans. Antonio Delgado, and Alex Soileau will close things out on Friday night for UNO in the men's 5,000 meters – set for around 7:45 p.m.

Javelin throwers Tyler Mitchell and Trace Williams will make their season debuts at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday morning, followed by Helen Baumgarten's first career attempts at the javelin. Baumgarten, Bell and Davis will also throw the shot put starting at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, and Helen will also participate in her first career long jump competition starting at noon. A rolling schedule of running events will also start at noon on Saturday.

New Orleans won six events, broke a school record, and set 13 personal bests in last year's outdoor opener – the Louisiana Classics. Returning Privateers Alexandra Weir and Anna Martin set new personal bests and took home third and fourth place in the 5K on opening night. The next day Baumgarten dominated the 400-meter hurdles finishing in 1:05.16 – two seconds faster than Reagen West of McNeese.

Other current Privateers who set personal bests in last year's outdoor opener include: Oxana Bonjorn-Giros (11:03.4, third place Steeplechase), Martin (2:19.84, 800M), Cade Litolff (1:54.90, second place 800M), Soileau (2:02.23, 800M and 15:15.35, 5K), and Gary Sandrock (4:09.02, 1500M).

WE ARE YOUR KREWE
For 54 seasons, Privateer student-athletes have had the unique experience of wearing New Orleans across their chests.  Like the city itself, our sports teams have been fueled by resiliency, grit, and the unquenchable desire to win.  Our city also houses the nation's biggest celebration each year. And much like a Mardi Gras parade krewe, we are tethered to our community through pride, tradition, a culture of acceptance, and finally our commitment to show that New Orleans is a world-class city to live, learn, play, and work. We invite you to become more involved with the only University that truly represents New Orleans all day, every day.  Join #NOLAsTeam, We Are Your Krewe!
