NEW ORLEANS – The University of New Orleans' 2012 tennis season came to an end with a pair of losses to nationally-ranked squads from West Florida on Saturday afternoon.
The No. 31 ranked UNO men fell to 8-8 on the season with a 6-1 loss to No. 2 UWF (21-2) while the Privateer women (10-5) dropped a 4-3 result to the No. 9 Argos (18-6).
In both dual setbacks, UNO's efforts were highlighted by match wins over nationally ranked players.
For the Privateer men,
Hossam Meligy and
Ricardo Campos defeated the No. 2 duo of Bruno Savi and Kevin Ducros 9-7. The win capped a 14-2 spring for the UNO pair, which defeated its fourth straight opponent from the top 20 of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's national rankings.
In the women's dual,
Marta Sans posted a 6-4, 6-0 victory over No. 29 Barbara Oliveira. The win adds to the resume of Sans, a nominee for Louisiana Freshman of the Year, who improved to 9-6 with all 15 matches occurring at the No. 1 spot in head coach
Burzis Kanga's lineup.
The Privateers picked up three other wins in the pair of duals as Meligy posted a victory for the men, while
Juliet Labarthe and
Fanny Benincasa won in singles' play for the women.
Meligy rolled Leandro Ferreira 6-0, 7-5 at the No. 3 position while Labarthe bested Sheila Smiley 7-6 (3), 6-3 at the women's No. 3 spot. Benincasa rallied from a set down to defeat Caitlyn Baines 3-6, 6-3, 10-6.
Saturday's dual completed the fourth season since the Privateer tennis program was reinstated in 2008-09 under the direction of Kanga and assistant
Piyanart Engineer. The winning record for the women's program was their first since the 2004-05 season.
