Video: Chaz Boyer comes home to score in ninth inning
NEW ORLEANS –
Chaz Boyer scored the go-ahead run as the New Orleans Privateers walked off with a 6-5 victory over Alcorn State on Tuesday night at Barrow Stadium.
Boyer singled to lead off the ninth inning for UNO (2-14) before stealing second base. The Privateer outfielder advanced to third on a wild pitch by Cedric Walker and eventually scored on another wild pitch by the ASU (2-16) pitcher.
The ninth inning score made a winner of
Stone Speer (1-3) who threw 2.2 innings of relief for UNO, striking out three and allowing just a single hit.
Prior to the ninth, the Privateers had conceded a 5-3 lead to the Braves after the visiting squad plated a pair of runs in the seventh inning.
UNO took their advantage in the fifth inning on a two-run home run to right field by
Reese Kanter, who was 2-for-4 in the game. Kanter's home run came in the same inning in which he robbed Devin Dukes of a potential two RBI base hit.
The Kanter blast completed a run of three straight innings with a score as the Privateers went ahead 3-2 through five.
Brian Dixon led off the second inning with a double, scoring two batters later on a
Jonathan Coco double for UNO's first run of the game.
Zacary Hawkins knotted the score at two in the next inning on his first home run of the season before Coco scored in the fourth inning on a
Zach Pohto sacrifice fly.
An error on a fly ball set the stage for ASU to knot the score at 3-all in the top of the fifth before the Kanter heroics. All five scores through the game's first five innings came against Braves' starter Mundo Sanchez, who allowed five runs – four earned – on 11 hits.
Harrison Gary (1-1) took the loss for ASU, allowing a run on a single hit while walking two in 3.1 innings. Three players had a pair of hits for the Braves in the game, including Walker, who moved over from third base to pitch to the final two batters.
Dixon and Coco both produced a pair of hits for UNO in the contest. Privateer starter
Daniel Martinez pitched a career-long five innings and allowed three runs – two earned – on seven hits before departing the contest.
The two teams will play again at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
