NEW ORLEANS – New Orleans battled back from an early 3-0 deficit with a five-run second inning to defeat Tulane 5-4 on Tuesday afternoon at Turchin Stadium.

TU (12-11) jumped on UNO (4-18) for the game's first three runs in the hosts' first trip to the plate.

The Privateers responded by hitting around in their second at-bat, starting with an Andre Damiens' single. Zacary Hawkins doubled to plate Damiens before the Green Wave registered their first out.

Jonathan Coco started a string of four consecutive one-out singles, the third of which ended the day early for TU starter Emerson Gibbs (0-1). Zach Pohto produced one of his career-high three hits in the inning, which featured seven different Privateers reaching base via a hit.

With the lead in hand, Blake Prest (1-4) relieved UNO starter Stephen Potter to begin the second inning. Prest held TU without a hit over the next three innings before handing the ball to Stone Speer with one runner on the fifth.  Prest had a pair of strikeouts during his relief appearance, for which he was credited with the victory.

Speer conceded a run to the Wave in his first inning of work before settling down. The fifth inning tally by TU was the final run the hosts would score as Speer kept UNO in the driver's seat through the final out, registering a save after allowing a single run on five hits over five innings.

Helping Speer close the game were several field gems provided by Privateer outfielders Chaz Boyer and Morgan Barger, in addition to plays at first base by Hawkins.

Pohto was 3-for-4 to lead UNO, including hits in his first three trips to the plate. Hawkins and Boyer had two hits apiece for the Privateers, who out-hit TU 11-8 in the contest.

The Green Wave's Sean Potkay was the only batter with a pair of hits for the host, collecting two in four at-bats, including a home run during the three-run first inning. TU relief pitcher Brady Wilson kept UNO off the scoreboard for 4.2 innings before Ian Gibaut did the same over the final three innings.

Next for the Privateers is a three-game series at in-state foe Grambling that starts on Saturday with a 12 p.m. doubleheader. The weekend set concludes with a 1 p.m. contest on Sunday.
