SAINT LEO, Fla. –A storm swept through the greater Tampa area, getting the University of New Orleans tour of Florida and Georgia off to a wet start on Saturday.
The UNO tennis teams had completed doubles' play against Saint Leo and had begun singles' play when the dual was suspended.
In the women's dual, the Privateers (8-4) trailed their No. 15 ranked foes from SLU (14-4) by a 3-2 score after winning 2 of 3 doubles' matches. The UNO men (7-4) dropped two of three doubles' matches against the No. 18 ranked Lions (13-5), who held a 4-1 lead when play was suspended.
In the matches that were completed, both squads picked up a victory over a nationally-ranked doubles' team.
Juliet Labarthe and
Fanny Benincasa rolled to an 8-2 at the win No. 2 court over the No. 8 pair of Laura Kemkes and Emily Singleton for UNO's first win in the women's dual. The duo of
Marta Sans and Manuel Gomez won 9-7 at the No. 1 court over Jeanette McDonald and Adrianna Daszkiewicz for the second victory.
On the men's side of the court,
Ricardo Campos and
Hossam Meligy posted the lone win for the Privateers, winning 9-7 over the nationally-ranked No. 8 pair of Victor Lozier and Matt Nicholson-Lewis.
In addition to the suspension against SLU, the UNO women's tennis team was unable to play their previously scheduled match against University of Tampa due to the weather, though the coaches were discussing a potential make-up date.
The 'Spring Break' tour was scheduled to continue on Sunday at 2 p.m. as the UNO men are set to challenge No. 3 Barry. Any additional updates to the Privateer tennis schedule will be posted on UNOPrivateers.com.
