NEW ORLEANS - The winning streak reached four in a row for the University of New Orleans men's and women's tennis teams on Wednesday afternoon in a pair of victories over Shorter at the University Tennis Center.
The UNO men improved to 5-2 on the season with their 9-0 victory over the NAIA's No. 10 ranked SU (6-5) squad. In the women's match, the Privateers (6-1) snapped the No. 15 Hawks' (11-3) six-match winning streak with a 6-3 win.
Doubles' play provided the momentum in the men's match while the women were forced to recover from an early deficit with a rally in singles' action.
In the men's dual,
Ricardo Campos and
Hossam Meligy improved to 4-1 in the dual season with an 8-5 win on the No. 1 court.
The remainder of the doubles' lineup was different for UNO as head coach
Burzis Kanga placed
David Malmgren and
Vinay Kamineni together at No. 2 and
Daniel Populus with Domink Kardell at No. 3. Both pairings claimed wins to boost the Privateers to a 3-0 lead entering singles'.
In one-on-one action, UNO did not drop a single set. Malmgren improved his winning streak to four in a row with a 6-1, 6-0 win at the No. 4 court. Meligy and
Yoshikazu Ysa won their third consecutive matches in a row at the No. 2 and No. 5 positions, respectively.
SU was unable to win more than five games in a single match as the Privateers completed their second shutout in a row over a visiting opponent.
In the women's dual, UNO dropped 2 of 3 doubles matches with the lone victory coming on the No. 2 court from the pair of
Fanny Benincasa and
Juliet Labarthe by an 8-4 result. The win improved the pair's mark to 7-0 on the season.
Trailing 2-1 entering singles' play, the Privateers won 5 of 6 matches to claim the dual. The lone loss for UNO came at the No. 1 position with the remainder of the lineup producing victories.
Kristina Martic, Labarthe,
Manuela Gomez and
Andrea Martin all claimed their wins in straight sets with Benincasa completing the dual with a 6-3, 6-7, 10-8 win at No. 4 over SU's Aurelie Gaborit in the final match.
The Hawks entered their dual with the Privateers having claimed 52 of 53 matches during the six-dual winning streak entering Wednesday. Only Division III power Emory and nationally-ranked Division II squad Columbus State had been able to win six or more matches against SU prior to their visit to the Lakefront.
Both UNO tennis teams will resume their slate on Friday at 2 p.m. against Delta State at the University Tennis Center. The Privateer men and women enter the dual with matching 3-0 records in Gulf South Conference play.
